Intermezzo is the middle section of the Triptych 'Exposé/Intermezzo/Symposium'. The flowing and sparse soundscape originates from a failed attempt to write a melody. The form of the piece is established by repeated melodic beginnings in the different instruments, where the trajectory of the piece makes it clear that the ambition to write a simple melody is unattainable in this piece. Rapid gestures, nervous twitches and noise-sounds spreads throughuot the ensemble, and the melodic gestures are reduced to quickly stifled outbursts. A couple of places a tonal melody and harmony shines through, like unanswered suggestions to a solution.  The piece was written in 1999, and I think it is a good example on a duality that often is present in my music: the friction between the urge to write energetic, fast and gestural music, and the longing for the poetical, quiet and resolved. In this way, the piece also makes a metaphorical statement on some of the basic conditions of composing.

Intermezzo er en del av syklusen "Exposé/Intermezzo/Symposium", som Eivind Buene skrev som huskomponist i Oslo Sinfonietta. Det flytende og poetiske lydlandskapet springer ut av et mislykket forsøk på å skrive en melodi. Stykkets form oppstår utfra stadige tilløp til melodikk i de ulike instrumentene, og stadig tydeligere tegn på at ambisjonen om å skrive en enkel melodi blir umulig å oppfylle. Raske bevegelser, nervøse rykninger og støy-lyder sprer seg i ensemblet, og de melodiske gestene blir redusert til hurtige utbrudd. Et par steder skinner en tonal melodikk og harmonikk igjennom, som ubesvarte forsøk på en løsning. Slik sett uttrykker stykket seg metaforisk om noen av de problemstillinger komponister står overfor. Og musikken bidrar forhåpentligvis til flere spørsmål enn svar.
